Dog sleds and dog sledding is a crucial element to Alberta’s — and really all of Canada’s — history and culture. Today there might be no need of dogs and dog sleds to travel the mountains during winter, but they nevertheless remain a tradition here in the Canadian Rockies.

Dog sledding is also a great way to experience Banff National Park in winter. It’s also an exciting way to see the winter alpine landscape up close, as well as getting a dose of history up close and persona. It can even be a great physical workout for the musher as well – it certainly is for the dogs!

Dog sled tours are available from November through April, depending on snow conditions. Some tours are designed to allow you to just ride and enjoy; others teach you the basics of mushing, with opportunities to handle a dog-team yourself.

Dogsled tours of varying duration are available your preference and level of interest including 1 to 2 hour daytime trips; half-day trips; full-day excursions; and short evening rides. You can also combine dog sledding with other winter activities in and around Banff, such as snow shoeing, ice canyon hikes, ice fishing, igloo building, or helicopter sightseeing.
